Hardware problem
by Kevanf1
Help! This is OS agnostic as it's a DVD RW issue so, sorry if it is
perceived as OT.
Does anybody have any idea why a DVD RW drive will read a DVD, any DVD
but it does not even register the fact that a CD has been inserted?
After some searching on many hardware tech sites/forums the opposite
seems to be common; where a CD is recognised but a DVD is not. Trust
me to be awkward :-)
It's a Philips drive (I think, it's not mine) in a Dell tower PC that
is a couple of years old.
The lens is clean and all leads are in place. I have stripped the
drive down as far as it will go and put it back together. It still
plays DVDs but not CDs...
Any ideas?

Russ. Sorry I haven't been in touch about that DVD. It's been hectic
here. MY wife has migraine after migraine so I haven't been out much.
Could you mail me off list with contact details again, please? I
can't find them from the other week for some reason :-(

Comical relief
by Andrew Edwards
A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day, their
passions overcame them and they took off for her house, where they
made passionate love all afternoon. Exhausted from the wild sex, they
fell asleep and awoke at around 8 p.m. As the man threw on his
clothes, he told the woman to take his shoes outside and rub them
through the grass and dirt. Mystified, she nonetheless complied and he
slipped into his shoes and drove home.
"Where have you been?" demanded his wife when he entered the house.
"Darling," replied the man, "I can't lie to you. I've been having an
affair with my secretary and we've been having sex all afternoon. I
fell asleep and didn't wake up until eight o'clock."
The wife glanced down at his shoes and said, "You lying bastard!
You've been playing golf!"
Just had to!
Regards,
Andrew

Jono Bacon & Ted Haeger at ManLUG
by Russ Phillips
We don't seem to have got our collective arses into gear enough to ask
Jono to come and give a talk, however, he is giving a talk at
Manchester LUG tomorrow (Wednesday) - details below.
Jen & I will be going. Anyone else planning to come?
Russ
------------------
We also have an extra midweek meeting, on Wednesday 19th April at 7pm in
the usual location (listed above). This is part of the tour organised
by Jono Bacon:
http://www.jonobacon.org/uklugtour/
Jono's talk will be on the Linux desktop:
Building the Next Generation Linux Desktop - discussion the past,
present and future of the desktop and exploring where the desktop is
going. A fun jaunt through the age of the Linux desktop with some
thoughts for the future.
Ted Haeger from Novell will be talking about AppArmor:
Implementing Novell AppArmor - providing a practical how-to on quickly
securing desktop and server applications with Novell AppArmor.

interesting
by Andrew Edwards
Now I'm not much of a windows-bash-er (pardon the pun!) because I
admire their ruthless marketing skills, their primary aim in the
market and success as a result of the relentless attack on the typical
household; however I don't think much of their servers.. and to be
hoenst the only version I would consider using has to be 2000
advanced, I've done a bit of reading about IIS back at version 4 and
I've seen many exploits produced for it but this did surprise me a
little to read:

I don't know how much truth there is in that, but there's a severe
difference clearly!

Lilo Problem
by stuart bell
Hi,
Before installing Linux on this PC I had a dual OS on the other one
(Mandriva/XP). I fouled up when removing the linux and got left with the
bootloader. It was OK for ages although I had to wait and select XP every
time at boot. Now a snag: On boot the computer gets to 'Verifying Pool
Data......'
hangs giving error code L 99 99 99..........
Any ideas?
Thanks

Revolution OS
by Kevanf1
Apologies to Russ and Jen as they've probably seen this on the Wolves LUG list.
Does anybody have a copy of the DVD entitled Revolution OS? It's a
documentary charting the history (up to about 2002) of Linux and the
OSS as a whole. It's a series of interviews with Linus Torvalds,
Bruce Perens, Richard Stallman and others. I'd love to borrow it to
watch it if anybody has it??? I promise to keep it safe :-) I have
tried Holborn Books but it is no longer available over here (probably
still is in the US).

The so called Win/Lin virus...
by Kevanf1
In case anybody has seen the sensationalist headlines proclaiming a
virus that infects both Windows and Linux PCs (pity it wasn't
announced on April 1st). Check this website out:
http://tinyurl.com/jasap
It gives a little more information about it. I would say that the
site is slightly biased :-) on the Linux side, but it does ask
pertinent questions.
