[Fwd: [SC.LUG] mac OS Tiger (or iPod firmware re-setting)]
by Richard Smedley
Okay, it's a long shot...
Somebody borrowed my MAC OS X (Tiger) disks, to try out the latest
Garage Band or ITunes or something before they bought a new Mac.
"Keep the discs as long as you like." I said - after all I removed
MacOS from my ibook when it arrived and it's been triple boot
Debian / Gentoo / whatever else I try that week since then.
Now I need MacOS back on to re-set the firmware on a 3G iPod with
a broken database (at least, GtkPod thinks it's bust), and the chap
with the OS-X discs has disappeared for the rest of the summer,so
has anyone out there either -
1.
Got the MacOS Tiger DVD (as supplied with ibooks, et al.) they
could lend me [I have a last-generation PPC ibook, so it's
fully licensed]
or
2.
Someone who has the iPod restoration software on either MacOS
or MS Windows [neither of which I have, see above] who could let
me use their computer to restore the afflicteed iPod?
Cheers,
- Richard
btw I don't mind off-list replies, but it would also be interesting
to see on-list who has PPC hardware =^)

GPS and OpenStreetMap
by Russ Phillips
Hi,
After watching the OpenStreetMap talk at LUG Radio Live [1], I've
decided that I *have* to buy a GPS to help both OpenStreetMap and Free
The Postcode. I'd like something that can log GPS tracks to upload to
OpenStreetMap, give me co-ordinates to enter into Free The Postcode,
and give directions when I'm driving. I'm on a pretty tight budget,
but the Garmin StreetPilot i3 looks good, and costs around £130 [2],
which I can afford.
Does anyone with experience of GPS units give me any idea about the
following questions please? Alternatively, could anyone suggest a unit
that would answer yes to the three questions below, for less than
about £150?
1. Could I use it to log GPS tracks for OpenStreetMap?
2. Could I use it to get co-ordinates for Free the Postcode?
3. Will I be able to get GPS tracks off the Garmin and into Ubuntu?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. I really don't want to buy
something and then find out it's no good for helping out these
projects.
Russ

Asterix genius wanted
by Kevanf1
I seem to recall somebody being an absolute genius with Asterix?
Simon, was it you? I've got a mate who is having some problems. Would
you be able to help if I gave you his e-mail address? It's a very
good friend of mine over in W'ton who is a member of Wolves LUG.

K-X-Ubuntu + restricted formats
by Kevanf1
I don't know if you guys have seen the Automatix project? It's
designed for the various flavours of Ubuntu, hence the strange subject
line. It simply makes it easy to add all of those grey or
questionable in legal terms bits of software for stuff like multimedia
playback. Libdvdcss and the w32 codecs etc. Add to this it also
installs Adobe PDF Reader for Linux and a few other various closed
source apps. Now I realise that there is Easy Ubuntu but having
looked them both over I plumped for Automatix:
http://www.getautomatix.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1
So, to get to the interesting bit. I received my Kubuntu 6.06 disk
pack a few days ago from shipit.org :-))) I finally got it installed
a couple of days ago after an abortive install which left me having to
wipe it and start again. That's another story and to be honest it
should not have happened to a distro that is billed the way Kubuntu
is...
Ok, this afternoon I set up the automatix software. Wow!!!!!! It
makes life so simple. I also never knew that the command line could
be quite so simple and easy to use :-) I'm a GUI junky, alright ;-)
I can now play any videos I find on the net (within reason and no, I
don't want those dodgy ones) but more to the point....DVDs :-)
Finally, I can play a DVD that I have legally purchased, on my Linux
box. Yes, I've installed Libdvdcss many times in the past, yes, I
have enabled DMA etc, etc. DVD playback has always been horribly
choppy. But, that's SuSE and this is Kubuntu. Mind you, ten minutes
of Planet of The Apes was enough for me....
So, just to round it all up. The Automatix software (a series of
ready made scripts) will install on most flavours of Ubuntu including
Xubuntu - Ubuntu-lite I don't know about..yet. In essence it's about
making life quicker and simpler. It certainly works.

A very useful web resource
by Kevanf1
At last, something that many people have been crying out for. A
hardware database of known Linux (distro non-specific) compatibles.
The times I have found hardware that works fine under SuSE but not
under Ubuntu/Kubuntu...well, I've lost count. This database is new
but it's growing fast and we can all help by submitting details of the
hardware that we use that is Linux compatible.
http://www.phoronix.com/lch/?k=home
I wonder if they could have a separate page for hardware that is not
compatible too?

Free online magazine anybody?
by Kevanf1
As the subject line staes, it's a Free online magazine :-))) No, I'm
not talking about Tux (I assume you all know about Tux, if not please
say so and I'll gladly post up details). This one is called Free
Software Magazine. It deals with free software, like it says on the
tin, innit :-)
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/
You do need to register (free, of course) but for this you get the
high res version every month sent to your mail box. Average magazine
size is around 2.5mb It deals not only in *nix stuff but also MS and
Mac free software.
Looks good to me :-)

Changing menu sizes?
by Kevanf1
Anybody got an idea about how to change the menu and toolbar sizes in
Firefox running in KDE? I seem to remember somebody saying (possibly
not on this list) that it was possible to change them in the Gnome
desktop. But surely, they can be changed in any window manager?
Oh, I'm really starting to love Kubuntu again now I have the silly
problem sorted out. Especially after getting the Automatix stuff all
set up. It just works :-) Is it better than SuSE? Not sure yet but
it certainly isn't as bloated.
