That puzzler....
by Kevanf1
.....has just got even more puzzling. I've tried the Ubuntu 7.04 live
CD on another PC (the Kubuntu one) and internet is fully working. No
problems at all. Correct sub net mask and everything.
So, any ideas? I'm all ears... The built in network card works fine
otherwise by the way...that is, with XP running from a hard drive.

A puzzler for you all :-)
by Kevanf1
I seem to have found some very strange behaviour involving Live
CD/DVDs on one particular PC of mine. I can start a live CD but
cannot get any internet at all. Yet, eth0 (there is only one network
card and it's built in) is supposedly up and running with a carrier
found. This has happened with both Sabayon and Ubuntu 7.04 so far.
It appears that the only anomaly I can actually find that might be the
reason is that the subnet mask is wrong. It should be 255.255.255.0
with both of these live cd's it is being set up as 255.255.0.0 I have
yet to try my Kubuntu live CD but I'm actually hopeful that this will
work correctly. The reason I say that is that both of the other CDs
are actually cover disks from Linux Magazine. If the Kubuntu one does
work (it's an official one from Canonical) then something very odd is
going on...

Hello Peter,
Is it still on? What's the venue?
Cheers,

A bit of good news for us all...

Check out this little article:

It's about the fantastic response Greg Kroah-Hartman had when he
offered, back in January of this year, to boost development of
hardware drivers for Linux. The future is looking good :-)

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy release 18th October
by Kris Douglas
Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone's gonna be jumping on the Ubuntu
bandwagon on account of the new, and pretty cool-looking release.
I know I'm going to be firing my machines ready for the update :)

Something a bit different...
by Kevanf1
No more questions for today :-) but how's this for luck? I bought a
1gb stick of 2700 DDR RAM from Crucial. It was meant for the Kubuntu
PC. The manual states it will accept up to 2gb of RAM. Ok, so I
thought I'd up it ot the 1gb mark. Pops it in this morning and it
will not boot. No POST nothing... oh dear thinks I :-( I used proper
protection in the form of a static guard wrist band properly earthed
(I always do). So I tried some other RAM that was 512mb but also
2700. That worked fine. So I then thought perhaps the RAM was
faulty.. So I've just tried it in the main PC in the house (the
Kubuntu PC is in my workshop) and it works a treat :-) It has speeded
up this old beast very nicely as before it was plodding along on
512mb. So, that old stick is going to be tried in the Kubuntu PC
tomorrow but I'm puzzled as to why the 1gb stick didn't want to play.
I did make sure it was properly seated as well. I also checked the
various BIOS settings and they 'appeared' fine.
Most unusual.. but at least it's being used :-)

How do I...?
by Kevanf1
.... I did something not so much silly but perhaps a little
shortsighted the other day. Remember I set up Kubuntu 7.04 on a spare
PC the other day? Well, being as it was supposedly only an experiment
I only used a 6gb drive :-( Consequently I don't have all that much
room on it. What I'd like to do is move the whole lot, as it is, over
to an 80gb drive that I now have spare (just put a 500gb in the main
PC).
So, what's the best way of going about doing this? I have plenty of
Live CD's knocking such as the latest stable Knoppix. Yes, I'll even
use the CLI for once if I have to ;-)
