Reverend Ted (AKA Ted Haeger)
by Dick Turpin
I read with a tinge of sadness that Ted Haeger is leaving Novell [image:
Crying or Very sad]
Ted is a great guy who I have in fact met and communicated with on a number
of occasions funnily enough only a couple of weeks ago during an exchange of
emails he hinted he was on the move I jokingly suggested my hope that he was
not going to Ubuntu.
Ted has always been a great promoter of opensuse and I for one will miss
him. Apparently he will still be maintaining his blog so the games not over
yet.

Good luck Reverend

Contribute at your peril (Rant)
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
I discovered this week that contributing and even trying to get
involved can have 'enthusiasm destroying consequences' some of you may
remember I was/am, possibly, working on a Lug Finder well the news is
I've had to remove it for the time being.
Don't ask me how but some nice person discovered a back door through
it and plonked billions of referrers to ring tones, porn and endless
drivel in the folder. Every time I spent 3 days and 30 minutes a time
removing them and the phplogger.php file the next day back they came,
at the last count it was 700+ links, I think I've sorted it now.
Then I asked to have my site listed on one of those 'Planet' sites
(I'm already on one or two by the way) which are growing in popularity
only to have the door slammed in my face with the most condescending
responses I've had in a long time;
Quote:
> Thanks for your mail. I'm having some difficulty in determining how exactly you contribute > to the community, perhaps you could enlighten me?
End quote.
"Did you even look at my site you self opinionated $%£@$£!!!!"
The best of that one is most of the feeds are about what someone eat
for dinner last night or where they went on holiday. Now I hold my
hand up and admit I'm a bit of a Victor Meldrew when it comes to
websites and stuff like that I mean why the 'F' do I want to know if
your dog had pups last night? its the same when people stick them
banners and balloons all over their house "Happy 21st Leanne" what the
hell makes you think I want to know that? Mind you I suppose Burglars
love it you might as well stick the sign up saying "Hey guys lots of
goodies here" (Hm I'm drifting)
I've had one or two other knock backs as well but I have to be careful
as there are sharp objects here. The thing is I cant seem to square
the so called 'Community spirit' with my enthusiasm at the moment.
This is not the first time that I've personally experienced what I
term "The Inner Circle" syndrome. the guy that first promoted Free
Software was on clickonline (Radio4) Wednesday night and he said the
most profound thing that will stick with me. "Even just using the
software is contributing".
Theres two views that can be taken here;
1. Don't stick your head above the parapet, someone will knock it off.
2. Don't let the buggers grind you down.
I'm now off to kick a small puppy and eat an endangered species.

Hello Martin,
It's an interesting project - and I'm sure will be invaluable to
many people. Continuing the aside however, what about permaculture
projects to _grow_ suitable fuel oil? These will persist long after
the NimH batteries have exceeded their cycle duty.
Of course without appropriate mechanical technology (lamps), this
does involve a fire hazard.
For those following the thread who have reservations about donating
PCs to five sixths of the world's population, many of the arguments
from either side can be seen in the olpc fora; but you might
also be interested in other (appropriate) technological work carried
out by aptivate.org - with their focus on access to *information*
> Another project that has prompted the Vanuatu work is:
V interesting - although their technology comparisons wilfully
ignore bio-fuels :-(
btw If you're involved with lutw, can you let their webmaster know that
her site breaks Accessibility legislation, and cannot be viewed by
a significant number of people trying to access it - a basic fix
for now would be some navigable text content on the homepage :-/

Which Linux flavor is best for me?
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
Every Forum and mailing list gets the same question from potential Linux
users every now and again "Which one should I use?" they generally get
inundated with the members personal choice rather than the one suited to
them.
Some of you may have seen this before but there is a site that hosts a test
which, based on your answers, will give you the Linux Distributions that are
best suited to you I've been given permission to link to it check it out at
my site under the heading Linux Chooser

Seeking Monsieur Joliet
by Frank Mitchell
Some folks rubbish the Joliet CD File System because Microsoft use it. Presumably somewhere there's an actual Monsieur Joliet who invented it. But can anybody identify him? Was he even a Microsoft employee?
