Just a bit of fun
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
Some of you may know I've been cheating on openSUSE and installed
ArchLinux on my Dell laptop anyway someone on IRC the other day said
"Oh god here's DT evangelising ArchLinux again" so to that end I
whipped up a quick image.
Anyone who is mega protective about Ubuntu do not look at this link
'it'll only upset you'
http://images.centrosales.co.uk/General/nights.png
PS its deliberately spelt wrong.

Google Checkout
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
Seeing as there's been nothing posted for a few days I thought I'd get
things moving again. Anyone else using Google Checkout? I spent some bucks
today and purchased two of these
http://aspireusa.net/popup_image.php?pid=147 one red and one black I want to
split my box at home which is currently dual boot with XP Home and openSUSE.
I did want the green one for the SUSE but the only UK site that said they
had some was not answering the phone which made me suspicious anyway I've
purchased them from different places one being ebuyer there's an option to
log your details with Google Checkout which in turn then allows you to
purchase from any vendor that supports that method of payment plus you get a
£10 discount if you purchase with that system.
I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far my Gmail account has had four
mails telling me the progress of my orders and gives a link to track your
goods. Apparently one box is already on a van and hurtling down the M6 from
Manchester as we speak.
Now all I have to do is wait for the phone call at work from the misses when
they turn up "WTF's this you've ordered I thought you was skint?" ;-)

Reverend Ted (AKA Ted Haeger)
by Dick Turpin
I read with a tinge of sadness that Ted Haeger is leaving Novell [image:
Crying or Very sad]
Ted is a great guy who I have in fact met and communicated with on a number
of occasions funnily enough only a couple of weeks ago during an exchange of
emails he hinted he was on the move I jokingly suggested my hope that he was
not going to Ubuntu.
Ted has always been a great promoter of opensuse and I for one will miss
him. Apparently he will still be maintaining his blog so the games not over
yet.
For the full details go to

Good luck Reverend

Contribute at your peril (Rant)
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
I discovered this week that contributing and even trying to get
involved can have 'enthusiasm destroying consequences' some of you may
remember I was/am, possibly, working on a Lug Finder well the news is
I've had to remove it for the time being.
Don't ask me how but some nice person discovered a back door through
it and plonked billions of referrers to ring tones, porn and endless
drivel in the folder. Every time I spent 3 days and 30 minutes a time
removing them and the phplogger.php file the next day back they came,
at the last count it was 700+ links, I think I've sorted it now.
Then I asked to have my site listed on one of those 'Planet' sites
(I'm already on one or two by the way) which are growing in popularity
only to have the door slammed in my face with the most condescending
responses I've had in a long time;
Quote:
> Thanks for your mail. I'm having some difficulty in determining how exactly you contribute > to the community, perhaps you could enlighten me?
End quote.
"Did you even look at my site you self opinionated $%£@$£!!!!"
The best of that one is most of the feeds are about what someone eat
for dinner last night or where they went on holiday. Now I hold my
hand up and admit I'm a bit of a Victor Meldrew when it comes to
websites and stuff like that I mean why the 'F' do I want to know if
your dog had pups last night? its the same when people stick them
banners and balloons all over their house "Happy 21st Leanne" what the
hell makes you think I want to know that? Mind you I suppose Burglars
love it you might as well stick the sign up saying "Hey guys lots of
goodies here" (Hm I'm drifting)
I've had one or two other knock backs as well but I have to be careful
as there are sharp objects here. The thing is I cant seem to square
the so called 'Community spirit' with my enthusiasm at the moment.
This is not the first time that I've personally experienced what I
term "The Inner Circle" syndrome. the guy that first promoted Free
Software was on clickonline (Radio4) Wednesday night and he said the
most profound thing that will stick with me. "Even just using the
software is contributing".
Theres two views that can be taken here;
1. Don't stick your head above the parapet, someone will knock it off.
2. Don't let the buggers grind you down.
I'm now off to kick a small puppy and eat an endangered species.

Firewalls
by Spatch
Hello everyone
I've been running Endian Firewall Community Edn on our office network for
the last 3 weeks.
I seem to be getting some reliability issues, but I'm not sure if they are
being caused by the software, the PC it's running on (a cheap PC, but
reasonable spec), the ISP or something else on our network.
Has anyone any experience of this distro?
I'm considering scrapping it and buying a ready made firewall appliance - I
haven't got time to be messing around with this. Does anyone have any
recommendations? I need traffic shaping and I'd prefer content filtering.
Thanks
Al
