Websites, there's some dross out there!
by ArchLinuxUser dick_turpin
Hi All
Some of you may know (OK Kevan knows) I create and sell websites some are
standard HTML usually created in Front Page or Joomla. I have no PHP skills
and would probably struggle to create one with just a text editor.
Recently I've been doing a heck of a lot of Googling and a good 80% of the
sites I've looked at are appalling not necessarily in functionality but the
presentation makes me want to slap the owner for offending my eyes. True my
choice of colour scheme may not be to everyone's taste but at least I don't
use, for example, yellow fonts on a white background! How the hell are you
supposed to read that?
The latest trend seems to be *Black*, OK not my personal favourite but I
suppose it can look cool if you are a Goth or something, do they use white
fonts? na, course not, no lets have a transparent overlay with mauve fonts
and a black background made up of ghosted images, lovely. Then of course
there's text with an image as the background, do we check that everything
is positioned correct and that everything fits? Nope, "So the text spews
over that pink border on my image, I like the picture and anyway I know what
it says".
My other pet hate is those stupid web effects for example the *Slider*
effect where a box of text or an image stays in view whether you scroll up
or down and of course the bumble bee that follows your pointer, its pretty
cute for about 30 seconds then begins to tick you off and don't talk to me
about background music. I was on some amoeba's website which treated me to
Whitesnake or similar on a continual loop with some of the other pet hates
of mine, towards the bottom of the page the guy stated he was looking for
*Web Creation Work!!*, make your own mind up as to what I was thinking.
So after venting my spleen with all of the above I was wondering what your
pet hates for websites are?

Forensics On a Cracked Linux Server
by ArchLinuxUser dick_turpin
Hi All
I read this post which was originally on slashdot, I have to say I found it
very interesting even if I only understood a quarter of it (Note to self,
you need to learn more). For anyone that has been cracked or suspect they
have been then maybe you should read this, I'm fairly certain you could use
bits and pieces to carry out your own investigations.

Typically the miscreant cant be caught or at least hasn't been yet I was
hoping it would end up with the guy tracking him down. :-(

Now that's funny
by ArchLinuxUser dick_turpin
Hi All
I read this from slashdot, well I think its funny
dsinc writes "A guy who uploaded the latest Star Wars movie got arrested,
pleaded guilty to 'conspiracy to commit copyright infringement' and
'criminal copyright infringement' and got jail and home confinement. As part
of his home confinement, he agreed to install some tracking software on his
computer. The problem is He's an Ubuntu Linux user and the gov't doesn't
have any tracking software for Linux. So he's been told that he must use
Windows for the term of his confinement. Looks like a case of cruel and
unusual punishment to me"

OT: advertising rules
by Kevanf1
Does anybody know if advertising rules apply on the internet to mail
that you is received making offers? I'm sure there was some
legislation not too long back that practically brought web based ad's
into line with other media. So, for example, claims made should be as
stated in the offer. If an offer of a product was made then it had to
be clear and precise.
I've been offered a magazine subscription at a discount. Very nice
and fully intended on taking it up. Until I went to the sub's page
and found that the offer was only valid for potential US customers :-(
No word of this in the initial e-mail and in none of the other three
from a series of months ago... So they've had time to amend the way
it's written. Ok, it's the US but I understood that they had to
comply with our advertising rules too?
Anybody???

Promoring Linux for Chocolate
by Joe Zambon
OK... so it suddenly occured to me...the LfC scheme is
great..but....where does it need promoting.
We have talked about it on this mailing list yes...but anyone on here
who has a problem with linux would just post here or be able to work it
out them selves.
My question is where should we be promoting this elsewhere so that some
of us get some chocolate and where should we be trying to promote this?
Does it tie in with promoting FOSS?? (God PLEASE dont kill me for asking
that! Little bit of a misunderstanding last time i asked something
about promoting FOSS cause it sounded a bit accusationary)

FAO: Dave
by Kevanf1
Dave, I inadvertently Bcc'd Staffs LUG in on a message. The message
is ok but I was going to send it separately. Can you ok it or do you
want me to resend it? It's the one with the subject of 'OT:
advertising. It's a genuine question and I'd love to know if anybody
is clued up on web advertising.

Identifying PC memory
by Kevanf1
Here's a good one for the panel. Imagine you have a box full of mixed
RAM. By mixed I mean from PC66 to PC 100, PC133 and beyond possibly
with PC 2700 thrown in for good measure. None of it is labelled apart
from the cryptic codes that are stamped onto the memory itself.
So, here's the question. Is there any way of identifying what is
what? Bearing in mind that some memory is suited to a particular
voltage while other memory requires another voltage. Obviously the
solution should be cheap and better still free. I know that I can buy
a small device that will accept all types of memory and test it giving
a full read out of what it is. They cost upwards of £1,000 :-( Can
I do this with OSS and PC? Memtest doesn't do it by the way, not
enough information.
Dick is excused from using his tremendous brain power on this one as
we have gone over it in the past....unless he knows more now than
before :-)
Ideas are greatly welcomed for this problem.
