Hi All Some of you may know (OK Kevan knows) I create and sell websites some are standard HTML usually created in Front Page or Joomla. I have no PHP skills and would probably struggle to create one with just a text editor. Recently I've been doing a heck of a lot of Googling and a good 80% of the sites I've looked at are appalling not necessarily in functionality but the presentation makes me want to slap the owner for offending my eyes. True my choice of colour scheme may not be to everyone's taste but at least I don't use, for example, yellow fonts on a white background! How the hell are you supposed to read that? The latest trend seems to be *Black*, OK not my personal favourite but I suppose it can look cool if you are a Goth or something, do they use white fonts? na, course not, no lets have a transparent overlay with mauve fonts and a black background made up of ghosted images, lovely. Then of course there's text with an image as the background, do we check that everything is positioned correct and that everything fits? Nope, "So the text spews over that pink border on my image, I like the picture and anyway I know what it says". My other pet hate is those stupid web effects for example the *Slider* effect where a box of text or an image stays in view whether you scroll up or down and of course the bumble bee that follows your pointer, its pretty cute for about 30 seconds then begins to tick you off and don't talk to me about background music. I was on some amoeba's website which treated me to Whitesnake or similar on a continual loop with some of the other pet hates of mine, towards the bottom of the page the guy stated he was looking for *Web Creation Work!!*, make your own mind up as to what I was thinking. So after venting my spleen with all of the above I was wondering what your pet hates for websites are? -- Regards Dick Turpin Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

Linux friendly hardware.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if any of you can help me. I'm after a IR remote thingie for a project I'm working on. I've seen howtos for making them yourself but my hands are so shaky I'm afraid that I wont be able to even attempt something like this if I would like hands at the end of it. I have tried looking around the usual online vendors and have come up blank. I've found plenty of remotes but not way to tell if they are going to work or not. I'm not sure how the rules stand about posting links to online vendors but any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks ~Jon

Hello everyone, I hadn't found this list before so only just seen all your replies and it's excellent! I'm a 3rd year student at Keele studying Maths & Computer Science, hence I can easily book a lecture theatre for a few hours in the evening and we can meet there. I need to check on times that lecture theatres are available but I'll be doing that today. Kubuntu musings...

Hmmm, do I like the latest Kubuntu? As you know, I installed 7.04 on a spare PC yesterday afternoon. I went on a treat and runs reasonable quickly (AMD AthlonXP 1800 with 356mb of 2100 DDR RAM). What I don't like is that it is not easy to work out how to actually install new (other software) and when it does there is no indication of it having done so. I also found that I needed to log out and back in for a couple of things. I'm not too used to that with Linux. Yes, for Windows it's the norm' but I didn't even get any indication that I needed to do this :-( I didn't think the installation had actually worked!!!!! Apart from the above I'm going to persevere a bit longer as this looks rather interesting... I do have a couple of very similar machines (Intel CPU's instead of AMD and less RAM but that's cheap enough to get) that I may try other distro's on. Arch could well be one of them :-) Dick, I may be calling in you :-) while the other I'd like to see if I can get either Slackware or Gentoo running on it. -- ============================================== Kevan Farmer Linux user #373362 Staffordshire

They don't get it......

Kids, they just don't get it do they? My son has just treated himself to a brand spanking new 80gb iPod. Lovely bit of kit I will admit. He comes to load iTunes on the PC. I am not allowed to run Linux on this one, I got massively outvoted. So, he downloads the latest version.....DING! First problem arises. The latest version of iTunes will not run on Win 2000 only XP and above. Ok, try one of the repositories with an older version. Downloads an older version that is compatible with Win 2000....DING! Second problem. This iPod is so new that it will only work with the latest version of iTunes. Of course I have told him that there is a very strong possibility that he would be able to sync the iPod with Linux (probably Kubuntu or Ubuntu). Will he listen? Guess? So it looks like I am now going to have to put bloody XP on a machine now. I have up for grabs 3 crt monitors. All 15" and all working fine (I tested them a few weeks ago on both Win XP and Knoppix). If you want them then just say. You can one or all three if you wish but, you'll need to come to Cheslyn Hay to collect them. Plug for job with some Linux and OSS involvement.

There is a position available at my place of work. Assistant ICT technician. I'm mentioning it here because we use some Linux in the network. We use live CDs to rescue documents when windows barfs. I have a box running Ubuntu server for LAMP applications, specifically MRBS. I've also got my hands on decent server hardware to use for a Linux based backup system (and more besides if I get my way) It's low paid I'm afraid but is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in IT support across a variety of platforms (Servers, desktops, laptops, wireless and Ethernet networks, multimedia equipment, backup, antivirus, user management etc etc). It would also suit someone for whom pay is not their 1st priority but wants varied and rewarding work. It's also school term time only.
