Websites, there's some dross out there!
by ArchLinuxUser dick_turpin
Hi All
Some of you may know (OK Kevan knows) I create and sell websites some are
standard HTML usually created in Front Page or Joomla. I have no PHP skills
and would probably struggle to create one with just a text editor.
Recently I've been doing a heck of a lot of Googling and a good 80% of the
sites I've looked at are appalling not necessarily in functionality but the
presentation makes me want to slap the owner for offending my eyes. True my
choice of colour scheme may not be to everyone's taste but at least I don't
use, for example, yellow fonts on a white background! How the hell are you
supposed to read that?
The latest trend seems to be *Black*, OK not my personal favourite but I
suppose it can look cool if you are a Goth or something, do they use white
fonts? na, course not, no lets have a transparent overlay with mauve fonts
and a black background made up of ghosted images, lovely. Then of course
there's text with an image as the background, do we check that everything
is positioned correct and that everything fits? Nope, "So the text spews
over that pink border on my image, I like the picture and anyway I know what
it says".
My other pet hate is those stupid web effects for example the *Slider*
effect where a box of text or an image stays in view whether you scroll up
or down and of course the bumble bee that follows your pointer, its pretty
cute for about 30 seconds then begins to tick you off and don't talk to me
about background music. I was on some amoeba's website which treated me to
Whitesnake or similar on a continual loop with some of the other pet hates
of mine, towards the bottom of the page the guy stated he was looking for
*Web Creation Work!!*, make your own mind up as to what I was thinking.
So after venting my spleen with all of the above I was wondering what your
pet hates for websites are?

Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for
intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System
packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

Job
by Spatch
Hi everyone
I hope you don't mind me posting this, but we have a couple of positions
available here and I thought some of you may be interested.
I've attached the job ad for you - I hope attachments work on the mailing
list!
Basically, we're after a php / mySQL programmer. Initially, you'd be
involved in a systems/CRM project we're busy working on here.
We're also after a Systems Administrator, although we haven't decided on a
job spec for this yet.
This would be a really varied job because you'd be involved in all aspects
of our IT team's work.
This is a great place to work and we're in a fantastic location - right on
the edge of Cannock Chase near Rugeley.
If you're interested in any of these positions, please send your CV to
careers(a)mobal.com
Cheers

Eee PC & GPRS connectivity
by Spatch
Hello everyone
I'm thinking of buying an Asus Eee PC, but I need to be able to use it for
GPRS connectivity (with O2).
I was thinking I could buy a bluetooth dongle, then use a Motorola Razr as a
modem. Does anyone have any experience of this? if so, does it sound easy
enough to do?
Also, will all bluetooth dongles work with Linux? If not, can someone point
me in the right direction of a compatible bluetooth adapter.
I would describe myself as 'in between learner and intermediate' with my
Linux knowledge.
Cheers

Foxmarks (Firefox add on)
by Kevan Farmer
Hi everybody. I don't know if anybody else uses this but I find it fantastic.
Foxmarks synchronises the bookmarks file on Firefox with any PC you are using
(that runs Firefox of course). It works on Windows and Linux :-)
Just thought I'd mention an extremely useful little add on to Firefox :-)
Look for Foxmarks in the Add ons section. You do need to add it to every PC
running Firefox but then it holds your preferred bookmarks on a central
server file ready to download or update as you wish.
Kevan...on the Kubuntu Pc using Kmail :-) oh, and happy because the car
sailed through the MoT yesterday :-)

[Announce] Next Keele Meeting - Monday 11th Feb 7pm onwards
by Peter Brooks
Hello everyone,
I'm going to be holding another Meeting at Keele University on Monday
the 11th of
Feb in the Chancellors building room CBA1.100. Any other LUG's are welcome to
join.
The meeting will start at about 7pm and run until about 9pm (if not
later), these meetings will now run on the second Monday of each
month.
For this meeting it will be very ad hoc, discussion/fix stuff. The
meeting will be run by one of my friends called Tommy, I am currently
on leave from University doing IT work in Northamptonshire and cannot
guarantee my attendance at this stage.
To get to Keele please follow your favorite directions search engine,
when in the Keele bubble the best place to park is in the Chancellors
car park.
Keele's own directions can be found here:
http://www.esci.keele.ac.uk/kudis/_campusguide/downloads/Keele_campus_gui...
Pretty much when you get up the Hill and enter Keele University
(You'll see lots of nice shiny IC buildings), follow the hill down
into campus.
At the roundabout after traveling down the hill, take the third exit
and follow the road until the next left, then take the next left and
park there.
You should then be outside the chancellors building.
The room itself is in the same area as previous meetings, it's the
first floor following the stairs opposite 'Vite & Eat'.
Hope you can attend.

Next Keele meeting [8th Feb]
by Mark Robinson
Hi,
I'm a new member (or rather someone who created an
account of Staffslug ages ago and has only just about
got round to subscribing to the mailing list!).
I was looking forward to meeting tonight, but I
noticed that it had been moved. I just wanted to
check. Will the meeting be on a Monday or a Friday (I
think the 8th of Feb is a Friday...)
Cheers
Mark

Hi folks, new member
by Steven Maddox (Cyorxamp)
Hi,
New members here and I just wanted to say hello really.
Had a quick look through the mailing list archives and there's mention
of meeting in Keele - always handy, I work on the science park at
Internet Central.
Have noticed there are two Staffordshire LUG's on the www.lug.org.uk
listings - whats with the other one? Seems to be dead anyways.
How often do you guys meet and if there's any need for a hand with the
web site or general access to a good local server for any purpose then
let me know!
Been a user of Linux off and on since I was all of 14 probably, but only
during the last 3 or 4 years been using it properly both as servers and
as desktop use. I occasionally help out with linuX-gamers.net sorting
out any hardware for them, how to guides, forum, etc...
Oh and as for bio stuff... I'm 22, male, came out of uni about a year
ago (up in Bradford) after doing Software Engineering, and currently
living near Kidsgrove but in the next month will have moved down to
Newcastle-Under-Lyme.
Looking forward to getting my hands dirty with whatever needs doing!

Sincerely...
