Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Announcement: Manchester Release Party
To: British Ubuntu Talk <ubuntu-uk(a)lists.ubuntu.com>
I'm pleased to announce that Ian Forrester (from BBC Backstage) has
booked us the BBC Manchester Bar on Friday 24th April for the
Ubuntu-UK Manchester release party. The party will start at 7pm and
go on until late (although after 10pm we may have to move to another
pub on Oxford Road).
If you are interested in attending you need to sign up before 9am 24th
April. You can do this by emailing me, adding yourself to the facebook
page [1] or adding yourself to upcoming yahoo page [2].
The address is: New Broadcasting House, Oxford Road, Manchester M60 1SJ.
The nearest train station is Oxford Road, although it's within walking
distance of Piccadilly and Victoria stations.
For car parking, the Cornerhouse is just down the road and their
website [3] has some useful information.
When you arrive just wait in reception where someone will meet you to
take you up to the bar.
Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think maybe interested.
It's time to show the London lot some competition!
Rock on Ubuntu 9.04!!

Re: [Staffslug] Staffslug Digest, Vol 41, Issue 18
by Steve Taylor
Hello,
I live in Audley. And currently I am imprisoned at Keele. Don't dislike the place, but don't like it either! If the job situation was better I would gladly give it up.
Yours,
Steve
PS: BTW I am mature student.

Google Rankings
by Tom Hill
I've just noticed that, we're back up there on the 'staffslug' and
'staffs lug' search terms. Back to #3.
However..
staffordshire linux = 8th, but it's an old listing to a dead link (with
Phil's twitter page at the top, heh)
staffs linux = no-where to be seen.
staffordshire LUG = 4th
I was pleased to see that the name of the LUG was back in the search
rankings (it wasn't before, due to an interesting Wordpress default that
excludes content from search engines) but I think some more work and/or
time will be needed to get the latter three into the listings.
NB. I ensured I'd logged-out of my gmail/Google account before
conducting any of these tests. :)
I'm not fantastic with SEO, but I do believe that more content is going
to the long-term goal. I've got a friend that works on SEO for a living,
so I'll see if I can tap him up at some point for ideas.
I've almost finished writing up a short article/how-to on ATA over
Ethernet SANs, so watch this space.

Firstly, welcome to all new people to the list :o)
I have just purchased LXF and I've got to say I'm impressed with our
little segment, may not be big but it's there and easy to find.. Thank you
LXF people :o)

Hello all!
Without that little piece in LXF I wouldn't have known about Staffslug.
I hope I will be able to get down to Stafford for May's meeting. Exams permitting.

Meeting et cetera
by Tom Hill
Hi all,
The few of us that managed to make it to the meeting earlier this
evening (well, a lot earlier) had a good natter.. It was good to see
everyone again. Those of you that didn't attend, shame on you! (I jest!
I hope your plumbing emergency was suitably tackled, Dave. :))
Unfortunately we weren't organised enough with any official matters, so
I suppose they will need to wait until next time. Speaking of which, we
do need to sort out the next meeting date. Preliminarily, how does
Monday the 13th of April sound? Being that it's just the 2nd Monday of
the month. :)
Again, good to see you all this evening. :)

* I'm personally wary about including /too/ many links, as I think it
just creates cruft. Perhaps keeping just the most common would be ideal,
but then.. It's and open discussion.

A little website tweaking
by Tom Hill
I've just been looking over the website, and thinking how it could be
improved:
- I'm going to write an article in a minute. What it turns out to be,
depends on what I fancy writing about. I've got a few ideas :)
- The Wordpress installation was set to block search engines (this may
improve our listings, Phil!)
- I've tidied up the links a little, and added another section for
package repositories.*
- I've added a tag cloud that, hopefully should go some way towards SEO.
It also looks quite snazzy (ninjabadger.net) when you've posted enough
articles.
I'll continue to tidy up a few of the ancillary pages. Feedback welcome! :)

Meeting, Monday 9th
by Tom Hill
Roll call. Who's attending on Monday? It appears that we don't have the
college unless something's changed, therefore I would have thought it's
not at all unpleasant to meet in Weatherspoons again - most of us know
where it is now. :)
I guess we should do the same as before:

No-goes:
Hopefully we'll need a bigger table than last time!
Tom. :)
