Hexedit - Recovery of ReiserFs
by Walt
Hi Guys,
I recently lost my HP MediaVault (not sure what happened but it has some
irrecoverable hardware fault) which uses ReiserFS with HP modifications as
the file system. I figured there would be a solution under Linux to recover
my stuff so I started googling and came up with this:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how I used your instructions with my MV drive in a USB
housing connected to a laptop booted from Ubuntu CD:
1. Get an Ubuntu boot CD (I'm using 8.04 beta)
2. Boot from CD into Ubuntu, making sure the MV drive is in a USB
housing and already connected to the system
3. System -> Administration -> Software Sources
* Check Community-Maintained Open Source software (universe)
* Click Close
* Click Reload
4. Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
* Type: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install hexedit
5. Get into hexedit for /dev/sdb
* Type: hexedit /dev/sdb
6. In HexEdit, search for ReIsEr
* Hit the Tab key (Toggles to the ASCII column)
* Hit Ctrl-S (puts you in search mode)
* Type: ReIsEr
* Hit ENTER
7. When you find the line (ex. 1E859830), change the last two digits of the
line number to 00 (ex. 1E859800).
8. Convert Hex to Decimal (ex. 512071680)
9. Mount it up (loop0 was already taken on my system, so I moved to
loop1)
* Type: sudo losetup -o $[ 512071680 - 65536 ] /dev/loop1 /dev/sdb
* Type: sudo mkdir /mnt/tmp1
* Type: sudo mount -r -t reiserfs /dev/loop1 /mnt/tmp1
You should now be able to see contents on /mnt/tmp1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

Well I tried it and it worked like a charm up to point 7. I cannot figure
out how to change a line number in Hexedit. I must be misunderstanding the
instruction. The guy who wrote this is unreachable. I can see the HDD,
Hexedit finds 'ReIsEr' and then I am stuck.
Hope you can help. Many thanks in advance.

OpenStreetMap - mapping event
by Russ Phillips
As some of you may know, I'm a mapper for the OpenStreetMap [1]
project. There is a mapping event being organised on Saturday, 4th
July to map the area around Blurton. Full details are on the wiki [2].
Any chance of seeing any of you there? You don't need your own GPS
(there should be some spares that can be borrowed), though if you do
have one, it would obviously be useful if you could bring it.
Also, could we get it added to the "Upcoming Events" section of the web site?

Ubuntu - Soo close
by Dave
Hello all,
Well, I've got Ubuntu 9.04 installed on a couple of machines and I was
very impressed with the wireless etc, but I've just come across a little
stumbling block..
It appears that my laptop is using an ATI based graphics card, and it
appears that for some reason Ubuntu and ATI only seem to want to work
(fully) with brand new cards.
I've got a perfectly working display on the laptop, but hmm, would be nice
to have the system working in harmony with the graphics card (3d etc).
The other machine is running an nVidia card and works super.
Has anyone else fell foul of this issue, if so have you managed to work
around?

List server: SMTP + TLS
by Richard Lamont
I notice from the headers to posts to this list that
deltaserver.awke.co.uk speaks TLS encryption when receiving emails by
SMTP, but not when sending them.
Is this intentional?
As GCHQ doesn't need to know which mailing lists I subscribe to, I'm in
favour of encryption everywhere. The more the merrier!

That's what I said innit? You're getting senile as well as bald (or I'm
completely missing the point) :)
I think he thought you were going to, which is what I was trying to
clear up. He thought you were going to and thought it wouldn't have been
a popular move, but I knew he'd got the wrong end of the stick and
that's not what you meant at all. After all, that's how LugRadio was
first announced - on the LUG Master's mailing list, so I knew he
wouldn't have an objection other than because he thought you meant you
were going to send a PDF, which you weren't. A misunderstanding.

Fate worse than death, that. Bit harsh. Think I'd rather shave my ass
with a cheesegrater ;)

Meeting - 11th May 2009
by dave
Hello All,
Firstly a thank you for everyone that turned out this evening, good show :o)
Right, what stuff went on.
- Twitter presence. This was mentioned previously, but we had concerns
about the account access etc, but it appears that if we use hash
tagging, we can filter the messages, so everyone can join in, just need
a twitter plug in for word press.
- Possible RSS feed from the site for updates. There is a basic one
already, but if we can get the twitter thing going, there may not be a need.
- Lug Radio
- Linux's stuff + BBQ (BBQ weather is hopefully here)
One thing that was just an off shoot thing was the possibility of some
sort of outing for Lug members (this was discussed when a few had gone
home). What do people think?
Also, for those that didn't attended, you missed the Netbook (and very
nice it was)
Anyway, we are hoping for the next meeting to be on the 8th June at the
same venue.

Hi all,
Just a thread to get the meeting ball rolling again this month.
Hopefully we'll have a better turn-out than on the Easter bank holiday

there. :)
So without further ado:

Hi,
<delurk>
I've just found this LUG. I've lived in Stone for 20 years and used
Linux for the last 15 of them. In 2001-03 I was behind the 'Stafford FM'
radio experiments which some of you may remember.
First distro: SLS (Slackware's predecessor) which came on nine 1.44MB
floppies. Kernel version 0.99pl9. Have since used Slackware, Red Hat,
SuSE, Mandriva and Debian before settling on Ubuntu a few years ago. I'm
using 8.04 LTS and hope to stick with it until the next LTS comes along.
I'm currently having fun trying out various anti-spam techniques with my
Postfix mail server.
Does Staffs LUG do PGP key signing?
