Hardware Supplier Update
by Frank Mitchell
Recently I wanted an ATI Video Card, so I decided to check out the Hardware
Supplier situation in Stoke-On-Trent. Some firms, like the "Computer
Technology" which I referred to last time, have vanished or been taken over.
Now there's another firm called "Computer Technology", which looks like the
place to go. This is at Unit 19, The Enterprise Centre, Bedford Street,
Shelton, Stoke-On-Trent ST1 4PZ. This is off Etruria Vale Road, and far more
accessible for Cheshire LUG Members approaching from the North. From Holmes
Chapel it's only 17 miles by road. Also you'll find a good parking area at
the end of Bedford Street.
Their website is www.internetct.co.uk for Mail Order. If you're making the
journey it's wise to phone ahead on 08712-882218 to check Stock Availability.
Also you should check out the Price List online, because they don't stock
everything. For instance they don't have 80-Wire PATA Cables.
Meanwhile for Software, Maxtux of 88 Boundary Walk, Trowbridge, is still
operational. Don't worry if the latest version isn't shown on the Website,
Stephen Lockley will get it for you willingly. And he'll be interested to
know how it worked out too.
Yours truly: Frank Mitchell.

GPS Tracking
by Scott Wilcox
Hello folks,
I'd like to perform some tracking via GPS that drops the data back to a central server via the Internet. The idea I have in mind and I'd spoke about in the IRC channel earlier was something that would send back over a 3G sim. Although these are not the most cost effective solution, its better than sitting someone on a bus with a handheld GPS.
I'd love to hear feedback, ideas, solutions and recommendations on this subject. Links to products/companies to contact are also very welcome.
Thanks for reading and for your reply if you do.

Greetings
by Scott Wilcox
Hello,
Some of you may have spoken to me previously in the IRC channel, probably not so likely for others! I'm a web developer that is currently based in Stoke on Trent, I work with local and foreign businesses on projects ranging from API integrations to the odd front end site here and there.
I currently use a mixture of OSs, OSX being the primary, one Ubuntu and one Debian server at home and I run Debian on the production server for tweekly.fm (65,000 users now!). I've been interested in Linux for many years and gained enough knowledge over time to be comfortable using most distros. I learned pretty quickly that there is no book that can teach you what experience gives so I jumped right in with breaking things and then seeing how I could fix them (don't worry, that was just when I was young!).
I'm hoping to speak to like minded folks here and have already met Matthew who is a rather lovely chap.
Sincerely,
Scott.

Tamworth Lug anyone?
by nigel howard
Hello all,
as I live between the Staffs Lug and the S Birmingham Lug, I find it
difficult to get to meets so I thought I would raise the question of a
Tamworth Lug.
I would appreciate any thoughts from you guys on this.
To test the waters, I have setup a FB (yuch) group to provide any feedback.
regards Nigel

Linux on a USB stick?
by Kevanf1
Ok, so I finally have a PC that will allow me to boot from a USB
stick. I can set up a 'live' USB stick the same as a 'live' CD/DVD.
Done this a couple of times over the weekend with both Ubuntu and
Lubuntu (the 2nd didn't work for some reason). But, I don't want a
live version I want to be able to run the distro, and it doesn't have
to be Ubuntu, from the USB stick and be able to save stuff to it or
alter what's on there if I wish just like HDD. The stick I want to
use is only 2gb so I know I am limited hence me stating it doesn't
have to be Ubuntu (or even Xubuntu). Trouble is everywhere I look it
only gives instructions for creating a 'live' stick :-(
Am I on a hiding to nothing with this one?
Oh, yes, it does have to be a GUI desktop but I'm fairly happy with
the lightweights (openbox, fluxbox etc).

Re: [Staffslug] Tamworth Lug anyone?
by Steve Carter
Dear Nigel et al,
Just to let you know that that Shropshire LUG meets in Telford. Geographically this is also between Stafford and Birmingham but West rather than East to Tamworth.
http://shropshirelug.wordpress.com/
That said I should introduce myself! I live in Shrewsbury and ran the meeting here for a couple of years but our (pub) location was remodelled and since most members were Telford based we moved to Horsehay just over a year ago.
We have about 6-10 (or 2-20 depending on timeframe) people to our meetings and quite a few members are into Radio Ham stuff and a few are building Arduino based projects too. My personal interest is with hardware and computer history. In fact I am planning a short talk/look/discussion on Ebook Readers for the next meeting. Something not on our website is that the Station Inn pub food is pretty good so a couple of people eat there. We meet in the bar but then we have an upstairs room to ourselves. The Beer is excellent.
See the website or feel free to call me for more a chat.
Regards,
Steve Carter
