Offering a meeting venue
by Russ Phillips
Hi,
As I mentioned in another e-mail, the company I work for has just
moved into a new office, which means that we're now in a position to
offer to host meetings, if that would be useful. We have a meeting
room with wifi and power sockets, and there's a kitchen if people want
drinks.
We're on Drummond Road, Astonfields Industrial Estate
(http://tinyurl.com/yeuu8ry). The meetings would have to be on an
evening when someone (probably me) would be around to lock up. I
finish work at 6pm every other week, so one of those weeks would be
ideal.
Is this of any use/interest?

Old Sun servers
by Russ Phillips
Hi,
The company I work for has just moved into a new office. The new
office has a server room with two large, old, Sun servers (labelled
"Enterprise 250" and "Enterprise 450"). Photo here:

Does anyone want one or both of them? You'd need to collect from our
office on Astonfields Industrial Estate, but we don't want any money
for them, we're just looking for someone to take them away.

Dell 1850 increasing raid disks
by Adam Naylor
Hi all,
Been lurking on here for a while, and of course when I delurk it's for a question rather than an answer :)
Got a Dell 1855 here at home with a couple of hardware raid disks running debian. I have a couple of bigger disks I want to put in it to give me more space. The hardware raid doesn't give me the option to mirror onto the bigger disks one at a time unless I keep the same volume size, which seems fairly sane.
Anyone know a way to do it without having to image the server to somewhere else, replace disks (and rebuild raid volume bigger) then image back? Or failing that, can anyone recommend some imaging software I can use.
I'm fairly up on the linux side of things as far as resizing partitions is concerned, and I have a PXE boot environment here if that helps.
I don't currently have a USB caddy with enough space on it to make this easy, so I'm after ideas.
Cheers for any help :)

FW: Ubuntu

No, I just used an old sata drive and let Ubuntu 9.1 do its stuff. This was
last September or so and it worked fine ever since. I have no idea what the
driver was. I did have a wide screen 22" Monitor on it which I managed to
set up correctly but I let that go to one of my grandson who needed a decent
monitor. So I put one of my old LCD monitors on it and that it did not like.
Since I cant get into X I cant change the display settings which is when I
tried to sort it using the command console but failed.
I thought I could change the boot parameters somehow to force to use VGA
settings but I could not figure out where they were or how to change them.
Anyway, its over. I wiped the disk and I am re-installing now. I just need
to test a perl script to make sure it all works as it should on a Linux box.

Just for the hell of it, you don't happen to run any restricted or
custom display drivers for, say NVidia or ATI do you?

Hi,
I have changed the monitor on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation and now Xwindows
wont start. I managed to boot into single user mode without display manager
but now I am stuck. Does anyone know how I can change the device file for
the display and what it should look like.
Thanks, Walter

4U rackmount server case to give away
by Christopher Tidy
Hi folks,
I have a rackmount server ATX case to give away. I'm pretty sure it's 19"
wide by 4U high. Black painted metal. It's about 5 years old, and almost
certainly a slightly older version of this:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Compucase-4u-Black-19-S411-SECC-Rackmount-...
Good points are:
- A solid case with space for an insane number of hard drives.
- All the blanking plates, slide rails and brackets are included.
Bad points are:
- One of the front handles is broken (though if you take off the handles,
it looks fine).
- No keys for the front door (but the knob turns to keep it shut).
- Some scratches on the top.
Apart from two fans, the case is empty. But I can give you many of the
parts you'll need to build a very basic (< 1 GHz) server if you want.
Might also have better parts available for a swap, or small money.
The case needs collecting from Edgmond Common, postcode TF10 8ES.
Preferably this coming weekend, because it's in my parents' spare room and
they want me to chuck it out. So please e-mail me at cdt22(a)cantab.net if
you want it.
Best wishes,
Chris Tidy
