Raising money for Cancer Research UK
by Russ Phillips
Hi,
Those of you that have met me know that I have long hair (for those of
you that haven't, it comes down to the small of my back). I started
growing it in 1998, and have only had it trimmed since then.
However, on Sunday the 20th, I'll be having my head shaved, and a
friend of mine (whose head is already shaved) will be having his chest
and back waxed. We're doing this in the hope that people will sponsor
us so that we can raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK.
We've already raised a lot, but I'd really appreciate it if some of
you would sponsor us. It will be happening at the end of an event with
about 100 people in attendance, and there should be both videos and
photos online as soon afterwards as I can manage.
We have a Just Giving page, which is probably the easiest way to sponsor us:
http://www.justgiving.com/russphillips/
Thanks,
Russ

Don't worry, Manchester Free Software is still a Free Software group and
not an Open Source group! We still stand for software freedom and
believe that Open Source misses the point. Still given that, we think it
will be great to hear what the OSSG have to say. And its a chance for
MFS to explain Free Software to people who know Open Source but haven't
heard of Free Software, and as RMS says in "Why Open Source misses the
point of Free Software"
<http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html>:
"We in the free software movement don't think of the open source
camp as an enemy; the enemy is proprietary (nonfree) software. But we
want people to know we stand for freedom, so we do not accept being
mislabeled as open source supporters."
About the BCS OSSG <http://ossg.bcs.org/about/>:
"The BCS Open Source Specialist Group exists to help demistify open
source practice and its implications, to illuminate the pros and cons of
open source and to act as a centre of expertise within the BCS. Through
lively debate, presentations and leading by example, we aim to showcase
the potential of open source software development and the impact it may
have on software engineering in the future."
In the talk the BCS OSSG will present:
* Their role.
* The work they do.
* Their take on the state of Open Source and Free Software in the UK
government and business.
* What can be done to increase education about Open Source and Free
Software in the UK.
In addition the speakers will also present their personal take on Open
Source and Free Software. The speakers are:
* Mark Elkins
o Chair of the BCS OSSG Committee
* Graham Oakes
o Member of the BCS OSSG Committee
o Principal of Graham Oakes Limited
"Graham Oakes helps people untangle complex governance, processes,
relationships and technology. He works with organisations such as Oxfam,
Greenpeace, Amnesty, the Open University, Skype, Vodafone and Sony to
define strategy and hence set up projects to deliver it. His book
"Project Reviews, Assurance and Governance" is published by Gower."
The event will include a Q&A session, discussion and then lively debate
in the pub afterwards.
Location
--------
The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at Madlab on Edge
Street in the Northern Quarter. "(Between Thomas St and the Craft
Centre, opposite A Bar Called Common)". We will be located upstairs. The
venue provides wifi. The talk is followed by an informal discussion in
the bar opposite (A Place Called Common
<http://www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/>).
Transport
---------
Parking: Around the venue there are parking meter bays that become zero
cost after 6pm on Tuesday but get full up. There are paid parking lots
around the venue, the light blue P in this OpenStreetMap centred on
Madlab

March Meeting - Alternative Attendance
by Dave R
Hello all,
As you know the next meeting is on the 14th March at "The Yard" in
Stafford. I understand that a few of you will be unable to make it to the
venue, so as an alternative I am proposing using the IRC channel as a
means to join in.
The main reason for this is because we've got a few items to talk about
(please see web site for details), and I want to ensure that as more
people get a chance to say something.
If you've not connected to the channel before the details you need are:
Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #staffslug
Obviously it's always better if you can attend, but if not jump on the IRC
channel.
For those people that are going to attend and have access to anything that
will allow access to the channel, could you bring them along?

Subject: [lugmaster] UCubed - A Free Linux Event in Manchester
Date: Wed, 9 Mar 2011 09:17:55
From: Jon Spriggs
Hi everyone, just wanted to tell you about an event that we are organising
in Manchester...
UCubed is a *free* one-day "Unworkshop" which focuses on Ubuntu and Debian
based Linux distributions, and the software ecosystem surrounding them.
The event hopes to teach users how they can become more involved in the
communities surrounding their favourite software.
*It will be held at the MadLab in Edge Street, Manchester on Saturday, April
2nd 2011 and will run from 10am until 5pm.*
Please visit http://ucubed.info to get your tickets and find out more about
the event and location.
Feel free to forward to any list or person you feel might be interested, and
we'd love to see you there!
Thanks

Re: [Staffslug] virgin strikes again but how ?
by Iain Simpson
The experience had taught me a bit about how apt-get works.
I restored the previous version from backup.
The experience had taught me a bit about how duplicity works. !
everything OK now (I hope)
But as you say - it's a bit surprising that they don't check whats been
downloaded.

virgin strikes again but how ?
by Iain Simpson
A week or so ago I had the unfortunate experience of upgrading my Virgin
20Mb system to 30Mb with their new Super-Hubs.
I'm not going into details here but an engineer came and 'set it up' for
me - including activating the system.
It's working sort-of OK.
Anyhow today I had a message on my Ubuntu 10.10 system
> E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
> E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_multiverse_binary-amd64_Packages
> E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
> E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
It occurred to me that I hadn't been updated recently.
I looked at file "
/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_multiverse_binary-amd64_Packages"
which contained
> <html>

> </head>
> <body>
> <a href="https://act2.virginmedia.com/Activation/start.do">Please click on this link to proceed with Broadband Activation...</a>
> </body>

How the H*** did that happen !!!
Luckily I had taken a backup 2 days earlier and recovered the file and I
think I'm OK
weird
