That is all true, you can get one of those old machines that have 6 ram slots and then buy some slightly newer, faster and bigger ram and the machine is perfect for linux...the CPU may only be a p3 866 but it will run everything the normal web browser and E-Mailer will want to use...those old machines had lots of ram slots because the ram was only available in small quantities..like 64mb a stick...but i have some 512 sticks that will fit in those slots and work fine...so its not always the CPU that it needs...its the ram that it guzzles...
