think of it a bit like this (and for god's sake don't quote me here..
i haven't gone near linux dev for ages!)
pre-alpha = pre-dev
alpha, beta = testing
release-stable = pretty well tested, working flawlessly...
hardened = very well tested, secure as it really gets...

Ah, now I understand :-) I thought you were on about some special
quality of a file system :-)))) I'm actually running Debian testing
(I can't remember its Toy Story name) on a PC in my workshop so I
don't mind treading shallow water... However, in this particular case
(the server I want to set up) I shall definitely be using a 'hardened'
or well tested and secure fs for both OS and data storage.
