Kris, that's exactly what I did do :-) see above from my original post.
Now, an update. The boot floppy works, yippee. However, I don't want
to have to mess about putting a boot floppy and CD into this PC every
time I boot it so I have tried to install to hard drive. Well, it
goes through all the bits and bobs and looks like it is doing
something... but it ain't :-( I have tried every little configuration
that Puppy gives you to install to hard drive and none work. Some
just don't do anything. You'll click on the accept this button (such
as for installing grub to the MBR) and it takes you back to the
desktop. No warning or error messages and the system doesn't hang.
So, now it's time to log all of this and post it onto the Puppy forums
and see if anybody else has come across this problem. I shall try to
install to another PC and if that works I'll just swap the drive over.
So, after all this I thought about giving Mepis a blast. Why are
there still distro's that are crap at setting up x-org? I get a
640X400 desktop and no option to make it any better. My preferred
desktop is 800X600. So, next question... any idea where the x-org
configuration file is hidden in Mepis anybody? Because it looks like
doing some manual CLI tweaking...
