Hi Stuart,
Looking at your fstab settings, everything seems in order.
I'd try giving your cdrom a clean as suggested earlier.
You could try the following logged in as root.
# mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdc /mnt/removable
If you then type df -h you should see
df -h /mnt/removable
/dev/hdc 177M 177M 0 100% /mnt/removable
The above of course assumes no errors. If this works you have probably got
a problem with your autmount daemon (autofs)
Let me know how you get on.
Mark.
Agreed with Mark. The fstab (stands for file system table) is the
linux way of showing you what drives are available and their various
permissions and mount points.
The onyl thing I would say is that is it a plain CD ROM drive or is it
a writer? The change to be made if it is a writer wouldn't affect the
problem you are having though. As you say, the KDE CD program (sorry,
I forget which program it was) can give you a listing of the tracks.
So, this would point to the fact that the drive is working to some
extent. I'm inclined to think that it is either the lens or possibly
the transport mechanism for the lens.
Not wishing to get over technical but I wonder if the transport is
stuck? The CD laser lens runs on a set of parallel tracks as the disk
plays and progresses. This is opposite to the old LP's of our youth
(Andrew, you can go to sleep here as this is antique ;-))))) ) where
the tracks on a disk started at the outer edge. On a CD/DVD the
information ( a series of pits on optical disks) starts from the inner
edge of the disk. So, I'm wondering if it is stuck at the track
information area?
Another thing you could try is giving the inside of the drive a good
blowing out. The compressed air cannisters are good for this as they
have a straw to get into hard to reach areas (like WD 40 cans). Don't
try spraying any lubricant in there though, you'll ruin the drive
altogether. Try a plain old drinking straw and carefully blow into
the drive to dislodge any dust and detritus. It may work but again,
it may not, sorry.
Just some thoughts :-)
