MY EYES MY EYES!
Thank god for text-speak I've got temporary blindness!
i still say ubuntu isn't the best newbie distro, i used to like
fedora
(then redhat).. and i moved onto 2004.2 gentoo iirc, but gentoo is
dead to me now..
Its a real shame I still reckon Mandriva (Mandrake as was) is the best
for learners (Don't use newbie it makes my blood boil) but after the
first month you're stuffed for Mandriva updates unless you pay for
them.
Gentoo is too advanced for 1st timers, Fedora (IMO) is too bleeding
edge opensuse is OK but the file layout and management systems then
taint you for Red Hat derivatives.
The first choice I honestly think people need to have explained is
that in effect they have two starting points; either an RPM or .deb
based system, now their not gonna know how too choose on that one. I'd
promote RPM but then thats not fair as I don't like .deb that much.
If you go down the .deb path I reckon Mepis is pretty good for ex
Windows bods for RPM I'd probably give Mandriva a go until the
updates expire.
[Please note how I didn't say "Stick opensuse or Fedora on it"]
