I finished up downloading some alternative driver from a link on the ubuntu
forums for the laptop that did the trick.
Will thy that config this evening on the dell box. Had no joy with it.

desktop (plenty on Google on various forums)...

Better to compare those values to your monitors manual however...

According to the specifications on page 18 the HorizSync and VertRefresh
are correct in that sample, this is a lot more of a minimal
configuration than the one you tried on Monday so you could try giving
this a whirl.
It may not be refresh rates that it is guessing badly however, could be
something else :S
