I'm not sure if someone went over this at the meeting, but I'll mention
it anyway:
It sounds like the monitor could be returning incorrect or invalid EDID
data. This is how the monitor reports its capabilities to the graphics
card. In some cases the EDID probe itself can crash the graphics driver
because it does not properly validate the data it receives.
Have you tried disabling the EDID probe? This will probably be done with
an option in xorg.conf called something like "NoEDID" or "NoDDC".
