Not sure about google mail storing calender info but google calender
works with CalDav and Ical.
I use Thunderbird and Lightning/Sunbird on my desktops
It syncs with the iphone/ipad
It syncs with blackberry (2nd hand knowledge)
I seem to recall reading something about sync with nokia phones too.
