I don't know if you guys have seen the Automatix project? It's designed for the various flavours of Ubuntu, hence the strange subject line. It simply makes it easy to add all of those grey or questionable in legal terms bits of software for stuff like multimedia playback. Libdvdcss and the w32 codecs etc. Add to this it also installs Adobe PDF Reader for Linux and a few other various closed source apps. Now I realise that there is Easy Ubuntu but having looked them both over I plumped for Automatix: http://www.getautomatix.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 So, to get to the interesting bit. I received my Kubuntu 6.06 disk pack a few days ago from shipit.org :-))) I finally got it installed a couple of days ago after an abortive install which left me having to wipe it and start again. That's another story and to be honest it should not have happened to a distro that is billed the way Kubuntu is... Ok, this afternoon I set up the automatix software. Wow!!!!!! It makes life so simple. I also never knew that the command line could be quite so simple and easy to use :-) I'm a GUI junky, alright ;-) I can now play any videos I find on the net (within reason and no, I don't want those dodgy ones) but more to the point....DVDs :-) Finally, I can play a DVD that I have legally purchased, on my Linux box. Yes, I've installed Libdvdcss many times in the past, yes, I have enabled DMA etc, etc. DVD playback has always been horribly choppy. But, that's SuSE and this is Kubuntu. Mind you, ten minutes of Planet of The Apes was enough for me.... So, just to round it all up. The Automatix software (a series of ready made scripts) will install on most flavours of Ubuntu including Xubuntu - Ubuntu-lite I don't know about..yet. In essence it's about making life quicker and simpler.
