You can do it the Stuart'n'Kris method.
Boot your PC on Ubuntu disk live. If display all OK cut 'n' paste the
whole Xorg.conf into the one on your installed ubuntu. You'll have to
be root of course.
I blew up a gfx card and trashed everything - this is how we got round it.
Works for me.

OK, Kevan thats an easy one.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and follow instructions right to the end. You need not mess with any of the confs yourself.
