better then- it ran through a lot of stuff then stopped. Telling me that
kernel sources were missing - error cannot find kernel sources i think. It's
a pain but the XP i'm using now is worse.

That's what I mean about the command line being better :-)
Ok, I thought this might happen as I hinted. It looks like it is
asking you to install the kernel sources. The make seems to need to
be able to access these. So, I would look at installing from the
CD/DVD set as I mentioned previously.
