Why does it have to be a chore with most distros?
I just stick with PCLinux. Fast, pretty and everything works.
All down to the legal wrangling I'm afraid Stuart. The film producers
do not wnat you to be able to view your legally purchased DVD on the
operating system of your choice. The mp3 issue is a patent one. MPEG
encoding is a licensed and patented method of compression. Arguably,
the OGG VORBIS method is far better and, best of all is free and open
source. The problem being that most mp3 playing devices don't lay ogg
files as well, which is very short sighted of the manufacturers but
there you go... As long as people buy them they are hapy to keep
making them that way :-(
