remove the trailing / in the cd command (my bad)

If you do that you will find that Firefox will install into the
desktop folder itself. You need to make sure the the source is in the
directory you want Firefox to be installed into. Normally you'd want
a link from the desktop to the actual program - think of an MS
shortcut here.
Firefox has caused a few grown men and Linux 'experts' to tear their
hair out. I've updated sucessfully before now but only after some
disasters. I'm surprised Mandriva do not have a more up to date
package ready. Have you tried a Google search at all?
