It certainly had that effect on me. I looked at OpenStreetMap some
time ago, but I couldn't afford a GPS at the time. I like maps, and I
like open source, so this really sparked my interest.

It appears that hand-held GPS units can be had for about £60-odd. They
don't do driving directions, but are aimed at walkers, cyclists, etc.
At least some of them are suitable for collecting
OpenStreetMap-suitable data.

Aldi and Lidl are the places to go for those. They probably do them
for a fiver :-) Realistically, they are possibly around £30 for the
hand helds. They seem to be good quality.....
