I thought ubuntu now had "bulletproof x" and was supposed to handle all that
itself.
Try renaming your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to something else (add .backup on
the end of something) and then reboot and see if it fixes itself.

 Hi,
I have changed the monitor on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation and now Xwindows
wont start. I managed to boot into single user mode without display
 manager
but now I am stuck. Does anyone know how I can change the device file for
the display and what it should look like.
 Thanks, Walter
