Thanks Kevan, Yes, first thing I did is look for the repair an existing system option then I tried the live install which works but I still don’t know what files to 'doctor' so the display works in the existing hdd installation. I can get into a command window using ctrl-alt-f2 and then login as root. But startx does not give any useful hints as to what I need to do fix this. I'll run the Ubuntu disk check now, just in case, and then I'll have to give up and re-install. Thanks everyone for helping, W
