Hi Jon,
Debian Etch ought to be all you need for a home server, if you need any
help getting it to new tricks let me know... might include windows
shares, remote desktop, ftp, web server, whatever really. Personally I
think apt is far more efficient than Yum and the pre-configured packages
are easier to get your head around.
However if you have to go with a rpm based distro I'd say CentOS is the
lesser of two evils :P
