I installed Ubuntu 9.1 on an AMD Sempron pc to see what it looked like. It
took 3 attempts before it worked. In fact I ended up using the 'live' boot
and then installed Ubuntu from there which sorted most of the problems. Its
fast and seems to be stable, so far anyway.
One thing I noticed, which is in direct contrast to Gordon's experience,
Win7 access is extremely good. Samba even works perfectly with admin shares
(c$) and it stores the password so I can open the share immediately through
a shortcut even after a reboot. So, Win7 security seems to be pretty ropey.

9.10 works perfectly OK on my Toshiba Satellite L40 - including wireless and
also on my Tosh Netbook NB100.
What IS broken is the Samba implementation, which means that access to
Windows 7 shares varies from normal to impossible!

I've been put off trying 9.10 myself because of all the bad things I've
heard.
- Rushed release.
- Things broken.
- Instability/poor performance
I think 9.10 is Vista... hopefully they'll bring out a Win 7 next :)

P.S. Yes, I know how ironic (or perhaps silly?) it is to compare Linux
to Windows in that way (that way being one's wank, the other good) :p
and I know it will annoy some people.. so in anticipating... here's
two fingers :p lol
2009/11/19 Dave R <dave(a)staffslug.org.uk>:
I just have to ask... What have they done with all this 9.10 release
of
Ubuntu / Kubuntu...
When I was using 9.04 (Just Ubuntu) stuff just worked, but I decided to
give Ubuntu and Kubuntu 9.10 a whirl (again) and it's not been a smooth
ride..
Wifi in 9.04, worked lovely, but in 9.10 Wifi, what Wifi? And even the
Restricted hardware driver thing that did the job of sorting the Wifi
drivers out in 9.04, isn't working correctly in 9.10 (Kubuntu) (there
appears to have been bugs logged about this).. I'm just concerned that
things that did work, now aren't!!!
Has anyone else had similar experience?
Dave
