Sorry chaps, that command did not fix it. It does something for about half
a second, the re-displays the command prompt. I tried using the --force
option but to no avail.
Is there no such thing as 'Safe Mode' I can boot into. I tried using the
setup disk which gives a display mode option but it seems ignore it.

And follow the prompts, it is worth a shot before doing a re-install.
I agree with this, this usually works as a 'catch all' for general
bugs and faults when it comes to the x server.
