Whereas I took the daring route :-) and upgraded directly from a
working 7.10 distro. I did have the various unsupported repo's
enabled in 7.10 but it automatically disabled them in 8.04.

I should add to this that I wondered if my version was playing up
simply because of going the upgrade route. It probably wasn't from
what I'm hearing... it shouldn't anyway as an upgrade from an existing
version is a quite legitimate way of updating the distro. Those bad
old days should be behind us now surely?
