Yes, it was that sort of talk, wasn't it :-)
It certainly had that effect on me. I looked at OpenStreetMap some
time ago, but I couldn't afford a GPS at the time. I like maps, and I
like open source, so this really sparked my interest.
I've been thinking that some of our clients may want to try
some mapping, to get communities more involved in their area.
(At least that will be my justification for asking for
the kit at work ;^)
It appears that hand-held GPS units can be had for about £60-odd. They
don't do driving directions, but are aimed at walkers, cyclists, etc.
At least some of them are suitable for collecting
OpenStreetMap-suitable data.
