I haven't been using linux as long as some on this list and I used to use
the GUI exclusively as a hand-holding exercise. nearly twelve months on and
im in and out of the terminal I tend to use things like ncurses etc more
than any gui offering when doing things I just think their faster and
somewhat easier to understand.

If you know the machine can handle the gui installer then fine. Some
people navigate them better than ncurses. I personally can navigate an
ncurses setup faster than a gui one but it's still nice to have something
easy on the eyes to look at.
People hang pictures in their houses not descriptions of landscapes i
suppose so why not use a gui? Depends what you're after i suppose. I can
afford to wait the extra minute a gui might generate over a whole
installation ;)
