The modem's not locked to any network. I will try and get hold of a SIM
from a different network and see how I get on.
Does the LED on the modem change colour when 3G is available? I was
wondering if there was any way of telling what sort of network you're
logged on to.

T-Mobile were giving away free Pay as you Go SIMs recently and may sitll be
doing so. I'm not sure what the data tariff on them was like though.
