if i were you i would give kubuntu a whirl, it's KDE interface will be familiar to windows - yet remain as individual as linux need be, also ubuntu platform is debian and stable, it's basically like a desktop debian which isn't that hard for beginners..

Actually, that could well work for you. Quite often one distro will
work perfectly with all the hardware while another is useless. That
useless one could be a godsend to another user..
Whereabouts are you Stuart? I've got loads of different distro's
here, nearly all up to date. SuSE 10, latest
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Slackware/Fedora 5 even the latest Gentoo. I can
easily let you either borrow them or do you a copy.
