And that gender assumption has probably just sealed the deal for me.
I'll stick with the meets in the big cities.

Firstly, for those who have never attended, our meetings tend to be
social
events where we have a chat about current issues and exchange
recommendations and talk about Perl a lot and have some food and beer. I
think most regulars would be happy to help out anybody with an open source
problem if they came along.
I'm curious why people expect there to be some sort of "event" going on
and
why they expect someone else to be organising it for them. Although there
has been talk of a technical evening covering a specific subject at the
meetings and mentioned on the list, the lurkers have not bothered to
contribute any ideas or suggestions from what I've seen. You seem expect
Dave and the rest of us who attend to organise something of interest to
everybody even though we've never met you and have no idea about your
abilities or interests.
As for the "it's too far" problem, are we all non-drivers or something?
Staffordshire from tip to toe is about 45 minutes on the M6 so it's not
going to be a particularly arduous journey for anyone. I'd be happy to find
a pub somewhere more suitable for everybody if people actually want to turn
up. Stafford was chosen originally because it was a roughly central
location.
For the gentleman who mentioned that he wouldn't get his laptop out in a
pub: I wouldn't worry about The Yard. It's very quiet on Monday evenings
and
we have an entire section of the pub to ourselves. There's no yobs or
football hooligans. I've had my laptop out and left it lying around with
the
group while I went to the bar or loo and it was still there when I got
back!

Jon
