Can you post the Xorg log here? I'm sure someone will decode it

Erm...nope. Too late as I've already wiped it and put 10.04 back on.
With hindsight yes, I should have downloaded both the logs files and
the xorg conf files. I was just too peed off with it last night and
wiped it. The reason being that I'd just installed LXD as my desktop
and the old plodder was running rather nicely. It has a 1.0ghz P3 CPU
but only 264mb of RAM and 4mb of that is shared for internal video.
So it's not exactly highly specc'd :-) I'm going to hook up the 10.10
live disk later today just to see if that does anything (the PC
currently only has a CD drive and the live disk is a DVD so I can't
just pop it in the slot. By rights it shouldn't run a GUI. If it
does then there is something odd going on.
