Hi Dave,
BCM chips have long been a pita. The Belkin you have you must check to
see what chip it has.
Ndiswrapper is a joke so forget it.
Atheros chips a simple with madwifi but if you want real WiFi then buy
an ALFA USB ( ebay) with a decent antenna. I can often get range of
3-4 mls over water using ALFA with an 8dbi omni antenna.
The RTL8187 driver with Ubuntu will see these chips straight away.
All my other info re WiFi is restricted so you'll have to PM me if
need anything else.
( Don't want DT grizzling at me!)

Dave. It could be that the manufacturer has done the usual trick of
subtly changing the chip that is used on the wireless card. I have no
personal experience of setting up wireless networking on any platform.
However, I have read extensively of this manufacturers nasty little
trick. I'm sure it's really deliberate but they do appear to have a
habit of changing spec's but not changing the actual model of the
wireless card :-(
I fear that we are back to a similar situation of years gone by where
some cards would work with Linux but others simply wouldn't and it was
a case of make sure you purchased a known Linux friendly card :-( Not
a good situation..
