ioctrl means that the device cannot be controlled, possibly because of
an update being incompatible.. this is why i like portage masking!
collisions don't happen if you tell them not to, paste some logs and
we'll take a look

Ha, ha....I think it's highly likely that we all have all been at that
stage at some point, Stuart. It does get better and very rewarding
with it. What you have to remember is that Linux is not Microsoft
Windows. You need to forget what you learned in Windows (Windwoes as
I sometimes comically term it) and learn computing the correct way.
That isn't a joke.
Once you mastered Linux you can give the BSD distros a try or Belenix
(open Solaris from Sun Microsystems).
