I only know the basics.

The goodness comes when LOT of different programmes and browsers can all
access the data really easily.

Hmm.. Spending money.. I can see them going for that one ;o)
It's just strange that for some reason, using apache 2.0 was running sweet
then moving to pache 2.2 it slowed down (had to upgrade for security
thing)
I've never needed that much performance.
