I have been on and off trying to resurrect a project called Papercut.
Basically it's a python app that bridges Forums to NNTP servers... i.e.
it uses a Forum (such as phpBB) as the backend - but lets you connect to
the forum using NNTP. Then just stick mailman in NNTP gateway mode and
bingo.
A single chain of discussion available via..
- HTTP based Forum
- NNTP
- E-mail mailing list
But easily manageable (including it's users) with a Forums
administrative web based GUI.
Will at some point hopefully pick up work on this, because I too hate it
when the conversation gets split between too many different mediums, but
yet at the same time you want to accommodate to how people want to connect.
I'm learning Python as I go doing this (I'm mainly Java, but Python is
similar enough) but if anyone else likes the idea and wants to give me a
hand then give me a buzz.

I love forums :-p
However, we have been down this route before and they just didn't get
much use... So I'd say keep them in mind but not for now.
