When you say about using the FOSS driver, where is a good place to get
it from (sorry if it's a stupid question)
It's already installed by default. When you boot WITHOUT the additional
'hardware drivers' (otherwise known as fglrx) installed, you're using
the X.org Radeon driver, in all its FOSS glory.
It's support isn't complete in every case. HDMI audio is interesting as
it's a relatively new addition (support wise) for some hardware
generations. There's a massive amount of info on supported/un-supported
features (including caveats) here:
http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature
In short: uninstall fglrx from the hardware drivers menu if you want the
FOSS driver back. I also note that your booting problem has vanished
with the kernel, so that's great news!
/Personally/, I also add the xorg-edgers Ubuntu PPA, which includes the
latest X & user-space components for FOSS GPU driver dev. BUT you might
want to consider this carefully if you're not a dab hand with apt. As
little trouble as I've had, when 'edgers has broken, it has done-so
spectacularly!
