From the little bit of research I have done the Android software has not yet
been
optimised or designed for a tablet and so these early devices do not
compare well to the iPad. I have read that Android 3.0 will be designed for
tablets and for this reason I am holding back from buying an Android until a
device that has tablet optimised software is available especially as
upgrading Android can be an issue. With Android specifically optimised for
tablets I think even early 3.0's could be easily better than the iPad.
I too wanted a tablet to read books but am slowly changing my mind as I
think that e-books like the Kindle have quite a few advantages over tablets
especially e-ink and the weight of the device. I appreciate its all money
but I would think for some there is no need for a tablet if they have a good
phone (of which there are many good Android phones) and a e-book reader.
Saying this I will no doubt buy the first Android Tablet 3.0 that comes out
at a decent price.
