the laptop on 192.168.0.* via the router on 192.168.1.* ?

Is there not a small 4 or 5 port switch in the back of either your
WiFI or router you could plug the printer into and have everything on
the 192.168.1.* network. It would make things a lot more sensible.

It would indeed, but sadly the router is downstairs where the phone line
is and the printer is upstairs.
