Unlike many other types of memory card, CF cards do have wear levelling.
A CF card also has all the electronics needed to operate as a parallel 
ATA disk, all that's needed is a simple adapter to connect it up. The 
host machine sees a perfectly normal (though small) ATA disk, no special 
tricks required.
I've used a few of these and they work quite well, and I've not had a 
card "wear out" yet, though I tend to avoid putting swap partitions on 
them. The limiting factor is capacity, but if you don't need much space 
then it works fine.
