I guess I see where you are coming from. But with the introduction of Wine
it is becoming a point and click reality of some Linux distributions with
Wine configured to run .exe extensions. Although this is still an extremely
experimental solution... it is a working solution.

My daughters use it for all their school work, they know to save it on
their USB drives as .doc so it can be opened at school they've had
little to no help from me if anything they ask how to format text more
than anything else.
