Hi All
I discovered this week that contributing and even trying to get
involved can have 'enthusiasm destroying consequences' some of you may
remember I was/am, possibly, working on a Lug Finder well the news is
I've had to remove it for the time being.
Don't ask me how but some nice person discovered a back door through
it and plonked billions of referrers to ring tones, porn and endless
drivel in the folder. Every time I spent 3 days and 30 minutes a time
removing them and the phplogger.php file the next day back they came,
at the last count it was 700+ links, I think I've sorted it now.
Then I asked to have my site listed on one of those 'Planet' sites
(I'm already on one or two by the way) which are growing in popularity
only to have the door slammed in my face with the most condescending
responses I've had in a long time;
Quote:
Thanks for your mail. I'm having some difficulty in determining
how exactly you contribute > to the community, perhaps you could enlighten me?
End quote.
"Did you even look at my site you self opinionated $%£@$£!!!!"
The best of that one is most of the feeds are about what someone eat
for dinner last night or where they went on holiday. Now I hold my
hand up and admit I'm a bit of a Victor Meldrew when it comes to
websites and stuff like that I mean why the 'F' do I want to know if
your dog had pups last night? its the same when people stick them
banners and balloons all over their house "Happy 21st Leanne" what the
hell makes you think I want to know that? Mind you I suppose Burglars
love it you might as well stick the sign up saying "Hey guys lots of
goodies here" (Hm I'm drifting)
I've had one or two other knock backs as well but I have to be careful
as there are sharp objects here. The thing is I cant seem to square
the so called 'Community spirit' with my enthusiasm at the moment.
This is not the first time that I've personally experienced what I
term "The Inner Circle" syndrome. the guy that first promoted Free
Software was on clickonline (Radio4) Wednesday night and he said the
most profound thing that will stick with me. "Even just using the
software is contributing".
Theres two views that can be taken here;
1. Don't stick your head above the parapet, someone will knock it off.
2. Don't let the buggers grind you down.
I'm now off to kick a small puppy and eat an endangered species.
