Hi, I have changed the monitor on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation and now Xwindows wont start. I managed to boot into single user mode without display manager but now I am stuck. Does anyone know how I can change the device file for the display and what it should look like. Thanks Tig, Nope it wont fix itself. There is no xorg.conf, according to Ubuntu's Help Pages its persistent and although I know what the word means I have no idea what it means in Ubuntu's context. I am running the repair/re-install now see if that works. If not I'll switch back to Suse and install from scratch. Try renaming your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to something else (add .backup on the end of something) and then reboot and see if it fixes itself. Sorry chaps,  that command did not fix it.  It does something for about half a second, the re-displays the command prompt.  I tried using the --force option but to no avail. Is there no such thing as 'Safe Mode' I can boot into.  I tried using the setup disk which gives a display mode option but it seems ignore it. W

Thanks Kevan, Yes, first thing I did is look for the repair an existing system option then I tried the live install which works but I still don’t know what files to 'doctor' so the display works in the existing hdd installation. I can get into a command window using ctrl-alt-f2 and then login as root. But startx does not give any useful hints as to what I need to do fix this. I'll run the Ubuntu disk check now, just in case, and then I'll have to give up and re-install. Thanks everyone for helping, W
